Radical Vulvas Montreal presents….the REVULVAS!

The Montreal Radical Vulvas Collective is putting on an evening of performance and discussion that explores the theme of safer spaces, feminism, and art: the Revulvas.

To open the dialogue, we are seeking performers to write/act/draw/create an art piece of any kind addressing women’s experiences with safety, safer spaces, comfort levels, etc.  We would love for pieces to further our understanding of ‘safer spaces’, or what we understand as “the creation of spaces where we can share, learn, and challenge ourselves and others in a comfortable and respectful environment”.

Submissions are due on November 2nd, should be around 4-8 minutes long, and can be in either English or French. The show will take place on November 14th, with the location TBA. Please email your submissions or questions to radicalvulvas@hotmail.com.

…..TOMORROW!

SOON SOON SOON

On Friday, November 21st at 8pm- THAT’S TOMORROW- you are invited to attend Montreal’s second performance of the Radical Vulvas (Clita Radicale, pour les francophones!). This year, the Radical Vulvas is bringing together dancers, poets, filmmakers, actors, painters, drawers, photographers, musicians, students, and audience members to create an open dialogue & celebration of women’s experiences.  We’d love for you to be part of the beauty & conversations that will be created, so welcome, all!

The show is happening at the Dragonfly Studios, at 110 Ann Street. To get there, go to the South end of Peel Street (opposite from McGill), turn left down Wellington for two blocks until you hit Ann; the closest bus is the 107, which drops you at the corner of Peel and Wellington. Tickets are available at the door on a sliding scale of 3-8$, and the space is wheelchair & stroller accessible- call 514 588 1467 to make use of this option. See you there!

and for those of you who were with us last year…are you ready for a weather repeat?

Fun & Funding

Some awesome news- we received funding from the McGill Centre for Research and Teaching on Women on Wednesday, which is a huge relief. We owe them an immense thank you for their support both this year and last. Check out all of their other great work at http://www.mcgill.ca/mcrtw/.

And secondly, we’d like to invite all of our performers to a potluck on Tuesday, so we can all meet each other, have some fun, eat some food, and practice our pieces if that would help with the jitters. So be there if you can- 7pm at 4007 St Urbain. Cheers!

The Radical Vulvas is like Tofu, and Other News

Over a weekend of Radical Vulvas writing and planning, one of our newest producers had a piece of insight we though we’d share with the world:

“The Radical Vulvas is like Tofu! A girl’s gotta get her protein, but really, it’s all about what you put in to it”.

Truisms. Sigh.

On a slight more concrete note, the POSTERS ARE IN! I’ll post it here as soon as it’s been scanned. Interested in helping us paint the town vulva? Let us know, and we’ll hook you up with some beautiful art from Alex Bachmayer (Rea just told me there were 15 vulvas on that page. Even Alex didn’t count that many).

AND- LAST WEEK BEFORE SUBMISSIONS ARE DUE! Write something! Paint something! Sing Something! I know I am….(actually!).

We received our first batch of funding from the Fine Arts Council at McGill- so much thanks to these folk for their support of our project. We’re always always looking for funders, so if you’ve got any bright ideas, let us in on them. And if you’ve got some cash, let us in on that too?

AND- we wrote a Hyde Park for the McGill Daily. Hopefully they’ll print it, so keep a weather eye out. If not, we’ll post it here anyway, because it’s beautiful.

All our love.

Hey Montreal!

We’re back! 8.5 months after our first run (almost one full gestation period?) The Radical Vulvas is happening again this year, on November 21st at 8pm, at the Dragonfly Studios. Wanna be a part of it?

The Radical Vulvas started in the spring of 2007 in Halifax, and is the creation of V-Day Dalhousie. It is a community response to the Vagina Monologues in which anyone and everyone is invited to express themselves, through any medium (song, dance, monologue, visual art, poetry, etc) on women. As a write your own production, the Radical Vulvas is whatever Montreal makes of it- we hope this will be another night of respectful communication and dialogue and a celebration of women everywhere.

Submission should be less than ten minutes and in by November 15th (Look! An extended deadline!) and may be in either english or french- the production itself is fully bilingual (see clitaradicalemtl.wordpress.com!). You can create your own piece, perform someone else’s work, or write for somebody else to perform- whatever makes you comfortable. Not to mention, of course, our active search for visual artists.

Hope to hear from you soon, and all our love,

The Montreal Radical Vulvas Collective
